As a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI), you will be able to teach:

  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • 60 logged dives (must have 100 logged dives before Instructor Examination) including documented experience in deep, night and navigation diving
  • Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care course completion (or qualifying training) within the last 24 months.
  • Medical clearance attesting to dive fitness signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

Note: The PADI IDC & PADI Examination and Applications fees are the same for both IDC “Enhanced” and IDC “Classic”.

PADI Emergency First Response Instructor (EFRI)

The EFR Instructor is a one-day course where we will cover the correct procedures and give you advice on how to independently run a PADI Emergency First Response Course. Once you have successfully completed the EFRI course you will be able to run the PADI EFR program anywhere.

Please Note: The EFRI certification is mandatory to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.

PADI Instructor Examination

The PADI Instructor Examination is held on the 2 days following the PADI IDC and will be conducted by an independent examiner from PADI Headquarters. By the time you reach the IE, you will have covered all you need to know to pass with confidence during your IDC with Sail Rock Divers. As a PADI Scuba Diving Instructor candidate you will be tested on your ability to teach diving in classroom sessions, confined water and open water. You will also complete a rescue evaluation, and a demonstration of five different skills from the PADI skill circuit.

Your knowledge of dive theory is assessed by completing five written exams in: Dive Physiology, Diving Related Physics, Dive Equipment, General Scuba Diving Skills and Environment and the Recreational Dive Planner.
Your knowledge of the PADI system will be tested by an open book exam on PADI General Standards and Procedures.
